“It’s been a great week for critical care publications, with Gonzalo Hernandez’s latest HFNO trial released, as well as other RCTs on stress ulcer prophylaxis, inhaled nitric oxide to treat acute pulmonary embolism and an educational intervention for anti-infectious measures. There are also excellent observational studies on bystander efforts in out-of-hospital cardiac arrest, emergency transfusion of patients with unknown blood type with O positive red blood cells, and the latest from Kath Maitland’s group, the AFIRM trial, evaluating myocardial and haemodynamic responses to two fluid regimens in African children with severe malnutrition and hypovolaemic shock. In addition, there are guidelines on severe perioperative bleeding and the prevention of surgical site infection, plus an entire open access issue from JAMA on “conflict of interest“.”
